Our Part of the Tame Valley
The map shows the areas we cover from Shepley Road in Audenshaw to Mill Lane in Haughton Green. It is largely in private ownership, including Landcare, the Duchy of Lancaster, Highways England and the Canal and River Trust. Some is owned by Tameside Council.
The friends group was oficially formed in February 2021 with the aim of tackling issues in the valley such as broken fencing and stiles, missing signage, badly worn footpaths, litter, and tree maintenance issues.
Improvement in the valley will be acheved through volunteers and bidding for funding.

In both my home and work life I am passionate about protecting nature’s capital for future generations so when the group started in 2021 I was really keen to get involved. I’ve been able to support with litter picks as part of volunteering activities through work and recently spent a couple of hours Balsam Bashing - which isn’t as scary as it sounds. As you can see from my profile picture I love Hedgehogs and have helped get several to local rescues, my car has even got a ‘Hedgehog Ambulance’ in the boot.
I live in Denton and often walk in the Tame Valley, especially Jet Amber Fields, in all weathers. It's great to be involved in the activities our group do to improve the area, especially litter picking and balsam bashing.
I joined the committee to help out with getting more grant money in so we can improve paths and other things, and to help with some of the fun activities we put on, like the treasure hunt in summer 2023, and some walks I'm planning. It's a great way to get out and meet other local people too.
I have lived in Denton all of my life and grew up walking through the Tame Valley on my way to school. Spending so much time in the valley from a young age gave me an early appreciation of its importance for both wildlife and the community.
I recently graduated with a degree in Zoology from the University of Salford, where I focused on ecology and conservation. I am especially passionate about amphibians and freshwater habitats, and I am keen to bring that interest into supporting the work of the Friends of the Tame Valley.
As a committee member, I want to help protect and improve the valley through practical conservation, surveys, and community engagement, while encouraging others to value the natural spaces on their doorstep.
Committee Members
I’ve lived in Denton all my life, and the Tame Valley has always been a place I’ve loved spending time. A weekend walk here is one of my favourite ways to slow down, enjoy nature, and recharge.
As a primary school teacher, I’m passionate about encouraging children and young people to get involved in caring for our green spaces. They are our future, and I believe it’s important to help them see how much joy and wellbeing can come from spending time outdoors.
I’m excited to be part of Friends of Tame Valley and to play a role in protecting and celebrating this special place that means so much to our community.
I’m a keen landscape and aerial drone photographer, with a long-standing interest in capturing the natural environment from both ground level and above. Photography has always been a way for me to slow down, observe detail, and tell visual stories — whether that’s through wide landscape scenes, close-up macro shots, or aerial perspectives that reveal patterns and connections not easily seen from the ground.
Alongside this, I have over 30 years’ experience working in IT, with a background spanning encryption, coding, networking, and technical problem-solving. Graphic design has developed as a creative outlet alongside my technical work, and I enjoy using those skills to produce clear, engaging designs that help communicate ideas and support community initiatives such as Friends of the Tame Valley.
I’ve lived and worked in and around Denton all my life, having grown up locally and attended Audenshaw High. After moving back to Denton in 2024, I reconnected with Jet Amber Fields and its surrounding pathways — an area that has since become part of my daily routine. Regular walks through the valley provide a welcome escape from everyday pressures and a way to reconnect with both nature and the local community.
Through FOTV, I now support the group with graphic design, website development, social media, mapping, and other technical aspects of their work. Being involved reflects what I value most: community spirit, shared purpose, and what can be achieved when people come together to care for and protect the green spaces we all enjoy. I’m proud to contribute my skills in support of the fantastic work happening across the Tame Valley.
